Looking for some appropriate noir for Labor Day? Why not enjoy some films that focus not on the femme fatale, the good wife, or the redeemer but on the working girl who takes part in the action?

Ella Raines played several such roles, and I highly recommend this article from Noir City, the magazine of the Film Noir Foundation, by Imogen Sara Smith: “Ella Raines and Film Noir’s Working Girls.”

Meanwhile, here’s one available free online starring Lucille Ball. In The Dark Corner (1946), young Ball plays a dedicated and self-assured secretary who helps her boss, who’s been framed for murder:

Although the bad girls may dominate noir (and we do love them), try these plucky working girls as we honor the labor movement and the origins of Labor Day in America.
