Dear Ladies, Gentlemen, and the Rest of Us:
As many predicted, here are the winners of the first (and likely last) Noir Star Face-off:
Both won by double the votes for the second placers (Trevor and Widmark) and by even more for the third place finishers (Bacall and Robinson).
If you’d like a final face-off between these two, let me know in comments.
My two cents in closing: This was, of course, a popularity contest, and Bogart and Stanwyck are certainly among the most familiar faces in “great” noir. I wonder what results we’d get if the criterion was “best acting” or if there were specific categories, like best femme fatale, homme fatale, private dick, gangster, maniacal villain, good wife, etc. Let me know if that interests you and perhaps I’ll set it up.
Thanks for participating!

So enjoyed this noir face off!
I confess, I voted for Edward G. Robinson (because he seems more noirish than Bogart, who almost transcends whatever genre he’s in), but it’s hard to quarrel with Humphrey Bogart. 🙂 I agree; a face-off for best in category – maniacal villain or best acting – would be fascinating (and challenging)!
Have you ever see the movie Humphrey Bogart and Barbara Stanwyck made together: The Two Mrs. Carrolls? I’ve not seen it, but I’ve always been very curious, though it sounds more gothic than noir.

So glad you enjoyed the poll. I voted for Edward G. too. He’s a more versatile actor who played noir figures from the ill-fated everyman to the doomed gangster. I love Bogart, but he mostly does one character.
I’ll contemplate a more specific poll for the summer.
And no, haven’t seen The Two Mrs. Carrolls yet. Gets mediocre reviews so I don’t want to pay to rent it.
Thanks so much for participating and for commenting. 🙂

Worthy winners even though I didn’t vote for either of them…Mitchum got knocked out in the first round…Definitely we should have a final face-off and yes to whatever face-off you choose, it was fun

Mitchum and Edrward G. are my faves, and I love Claire Trevor as much as Stanwyck as a noir star. I’ll ponder future polls!

Woo hoo! I was hoping these two would win – although, for me, it was a close race between Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson…
